Citizens of Monaco must have the Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) for Canada in order to fly to the world’s second-largest country.
The Canadian eTA was implemented in 2015 to improve security and facilitate entry to the North American state for foreign visitors.
The eTA is not a Canadian visa. Travel for Monégasque nationals to Canada is visa-free.
However, all visa-exempt foreigners flying to the country, including those from Monaco, must instead have a Canada eTA, which can be obtained via a simple online application.
Canada eTA Application From Monaco
Monégasque citizens are one of over 60 nationalities who are eligible to apply for the Canadian eTA.
Once obtained, the Electronic Travel Authorization is valid for a total of 5 years and grants the holder multiple entries to Canada. Each stay can last up to a maximum of 90 days.
Nationals of Monaco may use their eTA to visit Canada for the following reasons:
- Family visits
- Business trips
- To undergo medical treatment
- To transit through the country
If a Monacan citizen wishes to stay in Canada for longer than 90 days or for a purpose other than those listed above, such as to live or work in the country, they must apply for a different type of Canada visa.
The eTA for Canada is needed to arrive in the country by air, but not by land or sea. Since the majority of international travelers from Monaco will fly to one of Canada’s major international airports, most Monégasque individuals will need this electronic authorization.
How to Apply for An eTA for Monacan Citizens
Monégasque visitors can complete a Canadian eTA application form online to acquire the travel authorization. This is a straightforward process, which involves submitting some basic personal details, passport information, and means of contacting the applicant.
The following data must be entered into the online eTA form:
- Full name
- Date of birth
- Passport number
- Passport expiry date
- Current email address
The traveler must also answer some simple questions pertaining to health and security.
All the information provided in the application must be true and correct to the best of the Monacan citizen’s knowledge.
Applicants are advised to check their answers carefully before submitting the form. This is because even small errors and inconsistencies can lead to delays in authorization and can even cause the eTA to be refused.
Canadian eTA Requirements for Monegasque Visitors
Nationals of Monaco must meet the following Canadian eTA requirements in order to obtain the travel authorization.
Firstly, the purpose of the trip to Canada must be tourism, visiting relatives, business, medical treatment, or transit.
Secondly, the Monégasque citizen must have the following items in order to complete the application:
- Passport issued by Monaco with at least 6 months’ validity
- Current email address
- Credit or debit card
A copy of the approved eTA will be delivered to the email address provided. It is also electronically linked to the traveler’s Monégasque passport, which must be presented at border control upon landing in Canada.
If the passport is lost, stolen, damaged, or otherwise rendered invalid before making the journey to Canada, the Monacan visitor must reapply for the Canadian eTA using their new passport.
Applicants for the Canadian eTA have to be at least 18 years of age. However, all Monégasque travelers, including children, must have a valid eTA to fly into Canada. Therefore, a parent or guardian is required to complete the application on their behalf.
Traveling From Monaco to Canada
In order to travel from Monaco to Canada, it is generally necessary to fly. The nearest points of the two countries are around 4,500 km (2,800 miles) apart, with the Atlantic Ocean to cross to get from one to the other.
Monaco does not have any airports, but citizens of the European microstate are free to cross the border into France and fly from nearby Nice Côte d’Azur International Airport. There are a number of regular commercial flights from Nice to various Canadian destinations, including Ottawa, Toronto, Quebec City, Montreal, and Vancouver.
There is no visa to Canada for Monacan citizens since they are visa-exempt. However, a Canadian eTA is required if arriving in the country by air.
Other options for travel from Monaco to Canada include:
- A transatlantic journey by ship (see eTA for Canadian cruises)
- Arrive first in the United States of America and cross the land border (this will require the individual to obtain travel authorization for the US)
In these cases, the visitor will not need either a tourist visa for Canada from Monaco or a Canadian eTA; a Monégasque passport will be sufficient.
