Canada is the second-largest country in the world and a popular tourist destination. Its vast territory is known for its beautiful nature, which includes the Banff National Park, Niagara Falls, and the Canadian Rockies, as well as cities like Toronto, Vancouver, and Montreal. Additionally, the country offers a rich culture with a variety of languages and customs.
These conditions partially explain the record-breaking number of international arrivals received by Canada in 2018: more than 21 million tourists and visitors from all over the world were welcomed by the North American country over the course of that year.
Another important factor is that, in 2015, the government of Canada introduced the eTA (which stands for Electronic Travel Authorization), a new screening tool that allows visitors to get authorization to travel without any need to contact the embassy or consulate.
Eligible citizens from over 60 countries, including Luxembourg, can apply for the eTA Canada for shorter stays for which a visa is not required.
Canada eTA Application From Luxembourg
Citizens from Luxembourg can apply for an eTA Canada if the purpose of their visit is one of the following:
- Tourism or leisure, especially shorter stays
- Family visit
- Business trips such as participation in conferences and meetings
- Medical consultation or treatment
- Transit through Canada on the way to another international destination
Only travelers who enter Canada through one of the international airports are required to obtain an eTA for traveling. Luxembourg visitors who arrive in Canada by land or sea can simply present their passport or other travel documents to the border immigration officer.
Canadian eTA is, furthermore, intended for travelers who come to Canada for stays of less than 90 days. As the travel authorization is valid for 5 years, visitors are allowed multiple entries during that period, as long as each trip is shorter than 3 months.
Luxembourg nationals who are traveling to Canada to work or study, or are moving to Canada, must apply for a Canada visa from Luxembourg. There are several types of Canadian visas available, such as the work permit and visitor visa.
Note that it is possible to apply for a work permit at the same time as the eTA with no additional fee. Candidates who are denied the eTA can also apply for a tourist visa for Canada from Luxembourg.
Citizens from Luxembourg who need a visa for Canada should contact the Canadian Consulate in their country in order to apply.
How to Apply for an eTA for Luxembourgers
Luxembourg nationals need to fill out some essential personal details, such as name, contact information, occupation, and date and place of birth.
Subsequently, they are asked to indicate their passport information including the country of the passport, passport number, as well as dates of issue and expiry.
Note that since the authorization is electronically linked to the passport, the eTA holder must present the same passport that was used for the application when entering the country. Finally, the application form contains a number of questions related to the visitor’s health and criminal history.
Before submitting the application, the candidate is asked to double-check that all the information is correct and pay the eTA processing fee. The payment can be done using any major debit or credit card, through a secure online system.
If the application is filled out correctly, the eTA processing time is very short. Applicants can expect to receive the approval within 5 minutes from submitting the form. In some cases, the response may take longer, but the authorization is normally processed in less than 24 hours.
Canadian eTA: What Documents Do Luxembourgers Need to Submit?
To be eligible for a Canadian eTA, Luxembourg passport holders must fulfill the following requirements:
- Have an unexpired passport with at least 6 months’ validity counting from the entry date to Canada
- Have an electronic and machine-readable passport
- Be a full Luxembourg citizen (travelers with a different status, such as refugees, are required to apply for a visitor visa to Canada from Luxembourg)
- Be at least 18 years old. Otherwise, a parent or guardian needs to make the application
- Have an active email address for obtaining the eTA Canada approval
- Have a valid debit or credit card for the online eTA fee payment
If all the requirements are met, the Luxembourg passport holder can go ahead and apply for a Canadian eTA. There is no need to print out the travel authorization, as it is electronically stored against the visitor’s passport number.
It is important to note that it is currently not possible to extend the Canadian eTA. Visitors who wish to remain in the country longer have to apply for a new eTA for Canada at least 30 days in advance.
