Canada eTA for Finnish Citizens

Apply for an eTA

Whatever your reason for traveling to Canada, it is important to note that Finnish citizens need a visa waiver or a visa before they can legally enter the country.

In 2016, the Canadian government introduced the Canada eTA for Finnish citizens, an electronic travel authorization that can be obtained through a simple online application, eliminating the need to visit an embassy to apply in person.

On this page you will find a complete guide to the requirements needed to submit a Canadian eTA application from Finland and how to receive an approved tourist visa waiver for Canada attached to the traveler’s passport.

Do Finnish Citizens Need a Visa for Canada?

All Finnish citizens are required to have an approved travel authorization or visa in order to legally enter Canada.

Travelers from Finland are now able to apply for a Canadian electronic travel authorization (or Canadian eTA for short) to visit the country.

An approved eTA for Canada is a multiple entry travel authorization which allows a total stay of up to 6 months with each entry.

The process to obtain a Canadian eTA takes under 30 minutes to complete online, eliminating the need to visit an embassy or have an in-person interview. Travelers may have their visa waiver approved in only a matter of minutes.

Canadian ETA Requirements for Finnish Passport Holders

Please note that there are a few visa requirements for entry to Canada that Finnish travelers must meet. This includes but is not limited to the following items:

  • A valid Finnish biometric passport – All travelers who want to get a Canadian eTA must have a biometric and machine-readable passport, since the visa is electronically linked to the traveler’s passport. It is also recommended to have at least 6 months of validity in your passport
  • Personal information – While filling out the application, all travelers will need to provide information that pertains to their passport, personal information (address, contact information), employment, and travel details/itinerary
  • Phone, tablet, or computer – In order to fill out the application, travelers will need a device with internet access, such as a phone, tablet, or computer
  • A valid form of payment – Travelers will need a valid form of payment, such as a debit or credit card, to pay the eTA application fees

Once your electronic authorization to Canada is granted, it is automatically “linked” to your Finnish passport. The best part about the new Canadian eTA is that it is valid for five years (or until your passport expires, whichever comes first). That means that travelers do not have to constantly reapply for the eTA, even if they plan to visit Canada multiple times.

It is important to keep in mind that the Canadian eTA visa can be used for multiple entries as long as they are under 90 days in duration. If you are planning to stay for more than 90 days, you will need to apply for a different class of visa.

How to Apply for ETA Canada From Finland

If you would like to apply for a Canada travel authorization from Finland, the first step in doing so is to fill out the online application.

The Canadian eTA application requires travelers to provide a few basic pieces of information. This includes first and last name, date of birth, contact details such as address and email, employment history, and travel itinerary.

The entire application takes less than 30 minutes to complete. After the application is filled out, travelers will need to pay the eTA fee before submitting the form. In most cases, applicants can expect to receive a decision in their email inbox within a few minutes, although some applications may take a few days to process due to demand or further inspections.

We recommend applying for your Canadian eTA at least 72 hours (3 days) in advance so that there is enough time to process it or re-apply if need be.

However, Finnish citizens who need to urgently obtain a Canada eTA for travel within the next 24 hours are advised to choose the option for rush processing when paying the eTA fee. By selecting ‘Urgent Guaranteed Processing within 1 hour’, applicants are able to have their travel authorization processed in under 60 minutes.
