The new Electronic Travel Authorization, or eTA, was introduced by Canadian border control in 2015 as a more efficient way of screening foreigners and determining their right to enter the country before they travel.
This alternative system has helped authorities to process foreign nationals more efficiently, leading to shorter queues at the border and a faster and more convenient travel experience for visitors.
Do Taiwan Citizens Need a Visa for Canada?
The Canada Electronic Travel Authorization is only available to Taiwanese nationals who are entering Canada by air. Visitors who are crossing the land border or arriving by ship cannot apply for an eTA, but may need a visa or other travel documents instead.
The eTA for Taiwanese citizens is intended for visitors who are traveling to Canada for the purposes of:
- tourism, especially short tourist stays
- business trips
- transiting through Canada to their onward destination
- medical treatment or consultation
Taiwanese nationals who have been granted Electronic Travel Authorization are able to transit through Canada without a visa, provided they are entering and leaving from a Canadian airport. Taiwanese and other nationals without an eTA will need a transit visa.
Canadian Entry Requirements from Taiwan
There are several requirements necessary in order to apply for the Canada eTA. All applicants must have:
- a Taiwanese passport valid for at least 6 months from the date of travel
- a valid credit or debit card to pay the fee
- a current email address
The eTA is tied to the passport number used in the application and cannot be used with any other passport. Citizens of Taiwan who hold dual nationality should apply for the eTA for Taiwanese citizens using the same passport they will use to travel.
Applicants for the eTA are permitted to enter Canada multiple times withing the five year period, unlike the traditional tourist visa which was single-entry. The length of time the eTA holder is allowed to remain in Canada can vary with each trip and is stamped in the traveler’s passport, but usually stays of up to six months are permitted.
Taiwanese Citizens Will Need an Electronic Travel Authorization to Fly to Canada
Taiwanese travelers who qualify for the eTA need to complete the simple online application form and provide some basic personal details, including:
- passport details, including passport number
- passport issue date and expiry date
Travelers need to answer a number of security and health-related questions before submitting their online application. It is advisable to carefully check all information provided on the form, as mistakes or inconsistencies can lead to the eTA for Taiwanese citizens being delayed or rejected.
There is also an eTA fee that must be paid online using either debit card or credit card.
Applying for an eTA Online
It is important that the eTA application from Taiwan is submitted at least 3 days before travel for travelers who have already finalized their travel plans, to allow time for the details to be processed and the eTA to be sent to the applicant.
The application process is easy and painless, and can be done from anywhere in the world using desktop, tablet or mobile, provided you have an internet connection. Once approved the eTA will be delivered safely and electronically to the applicant via email.
The Electronic Travel Authorization is valid for a period of five years from the date of issue.
eTA Validity for Citizens of Taiwan
Each individual Canadian visit is not allowed to last more than six months under the eTA, and visitors are not allowed to stay beyond that date. Taiwanese nationals who wish to extend their stay in the country can apply for an extension, provided they do so at least 30 days in advance.
Taiwanese applicants need to have an electronic passport that is machine readable in order to use the eTA for Taiwanese citizens. The vast majority of Taiwanese passports are machine-readable and accord with worldwide standards, but travelers can get in touch with the Taiwanese passport office if they need further information.
Only full Taiwanese citizens can apply for the Canada Electronic Travel Authorization. Travelers who hold a temporary passport or travel documents with a different status, such as refugees or temporary residents, will need to apply for a Canadian visa, unless they also hold a passport from another visa-exempt country.Apply for an eTA
