Canada is a fabulous tourist destination for any time of the year, whether it’s to escape the cold Finnish winters or to warm up during the summer. In fact, there are plenty of things to do and see, from the spectacular Niagara Falls to the sprawling nature of the Yukon, the bustling cities of Quebec, Calgary, or Toronto, or even the remote wilderness around the perimeter of the country.
Whatever your reason for traveling to Canada, it is important to note that Finnish citizens need a visa before they can legally enter the country!
Before they can travel to Canada, however, all Finnish citizens are required to have a visa.
Do Finnish citizens need a visa for Canada
Yes, all Finnish citizens are required to have a visa in order to legally enter Canada.
Thanks to a new initiative set forth by the Canadian government, there is a quick and easy way for Finnish citizens to get a Canadian visa. The visa to Canada from Finland is called the Canadian electronic travel authorization (or Canadian eTA for short). Thanks to this new visa, there is no longer any need to visit an embassy, gather a pile of paperwork, or have an in-person interview.
In fact, the process to obtain a Canadian eTA takes only 30 minutes to complete the application, and travelers can expect to have their visa approved in only a matter of minutes! We have come up with a guide that includes everything you need to know in order to obtain a Canadian travel visa as a Finnish citizen.
Canadian ETA requirements for Finnish passport holders
Please note that there are a few visa requirements for Canada from Finland travelers. This includes but is not limited to the following items:
- A valid Finnish biometric passport – All travelers who want to get a Canadian eTA must have a biometric and machine-readable passport, since the visa is electronically linked to the traveler’s passport. It is also recommended to have at least 6 months of validity in your passport
- Personal information – While filling out the application, all travelers will need to provide information that pertains to their passport, personal information (address, contact information), employment, and travel details/itinerary
- Phone, tablet, or computer – In order to fill out the application, travelers will need a device with internet access, such as a phone, tablet, or computer
- A valid form of payment – Travelers will need a valid form of payment, such as a debit or credit card, to pay the eTA application fees
How to apply for ETA Canada from Finland
If you would like to apply for a Canada visa from Finland, the first step in doing so is to fill out the online application.
The Canadian eTA visa application will ask all travelers for a few basic pieces of information. This includes questions about themselves (such as their first and last name, date of birth, and so on), contact details (address, email), employment history, and travel itinerary.
The entire application takes less than 30 minutes to complete. After the application is filled out and ready to be submitted, travelers will need to pay the eTA fee and wait. In most cases, you can expect to receive a decision in your email inbox within a few minutes, although some applications may take a few days due to demand or further inspections.
Once your electronic authorization to Canada is granted, it is automatically “linked” to your Finnish passport. The best part about the new Canadian eTA is that it is valid for five years (or until your passport expires, whichever comes first). That means that travelers do not have to constantly reapply for the eTA, even if they plan to visit Canada multiple times.
It is important to keep in mind that the Canadian eTA visa can be used for multiple entries as long as they are under 90 days in duration. If you are planning to stay for more than 90 days, you will need to apply for a different class of visa.
Likewise, we recommend applying for your Canadian eTA at least 72 hours (3 days) in advance so that there is enough time to process it or re-apply if need be.Apply for an eTA
